"The city’s most picturesque river views can be enjoyed from this stunning three-bedroom residence at Watergate South, one of Washington’s premiere full-service, luxury buildings."
Located in Washington’s Foggy Bottom neighborhood, this updated Watergate South residence boasts three bedrooms, three and one-half baths, over 2,450 square feet of living space and Potomac River views. A tiled entry hall leads into the home’s expansive open space living area with diagonally laid cherry hardwood floors, built-ins, a gas fireplace, an open dining room, breakfast alcove and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows. Renovations throughout have retained midcentury details such as lovely wainscoting and an original Watergate chandelier, while updating the overall feel in a chic and modern manner.
The chef’s kitchen is a centerpiece attraction, melding the best of traditional eat-in and contemporary open-concept design. Granite counters, meticulously crafted wood and glass cabinets, panelized appliances and white subway tile backsplashes come together for an unforgettable cooking experience. Take drinks and meals out onto a sweeping private balcony that spans the entire unit frontage, overlooking lush grounds, a swimming pool, the Potomac, and all the way to Rosslyn on the other side of the river.
All three bedrooms received new carpeting in 2016. The en suite bathrooms in the master bedroom and the second bedroom were completely renovated in 2018. The master bath has a new marble vanity and retains the classic Watergate feel with a large shower, while the second bath has a complete makeover with a new tub, Carrara marble vanity and large walk-in frameless shower. The bath for the third bedroom/den was completely renovated in 2017 with beige and tan marble tiles and a contemporary feel. Two bedrooms have walk-in closets while all enjoy direct balcony access. Two parking spaces and two storage units convey. Another added bonus of this property is the large walk-in laundry with your own private machines and abundant pantry storage.
Watergate South Amenities
The 14-story Watergate South Residences was delivered in 1971 as the final luxury residential cooperative in the 10-acre Watergate community. The iconic complex with its curvilinear facades and fascinating political backstory was designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti, and built over a decade-long period. Residents at Watergate South enjoy their own heated swimming pool, fitness center, parking and friendly and accommodating staff including 24/7 front desk, concierge and doorman.
The Watergate community is home to six buildings, including the well-known Watergate Hotel. There are also flowering gardens, a park, fountains, multiple restaurants, an art gallery and frame shop, a CVS pharmacy, a post office, drycleaners, a deli, and a superb pastry shop that has been open since 1966, featuring decadent buttercream cakes, mousses and over 100 other varieties of cake, pie, cookies, scones and tarts.
Foggy Bottom
The Watergate complex was Washington’s first mixed use development. While “live, work and play” projects are more common now, this classic midcentury modern community is still in a class by itself, delivering a high standard for luxury, full service, convenience and location. Home to politicians and business leaders, the Foggy Bottom compound is ideally situated near the banks of the Potomac, with Georgetown directly to the north and the White House, National Mall and countless landmarks to the east and south.
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is right across the street from Watergate South while George Washington University and the Foggy Bottom Metro Station are just a 10-minute walk away. The on-site proximity of the Watergate Hotel is also a bonus when friends and guests come to town. This is a very walk-friendly locale, whether strolling south to the Lincoln Memorial and other landmarks and national museums, or heading north along a walking and jogging trail to the new Georgetown Waterfront Park, shops and restaurants.
The Foggy Bottom neighborhood predates the forming of the nation’s capital and was settled by German immigrants near the confluence of the Potomac River and Rock Creek in 1763. The nascent community became known as the town of Hamburg, but by the 1800s, took on the name of Foggy Bottom due to the murky atmospherics of fog off the river mingling with industrial smoke from city gas works, beer breweries and glass manufacturing plants. Today, the Watergate community stands on land once used by the Washington Gas Light Company.
